While annotating “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” My annotating goals are being achieved, focusing on global edits instead of local edits has helped me immensely. My speed and concentration has improved as a result of not looking for grammatical errors and small, specific details.

This essay was first published on the World-Post in January of 2014. The author of this essay Yo-Yo Ma, interestingly, is an award winning Cellist who has won over 17 Grammys and produced 90 albums. Through his bio I initially thought that was going to be heavy bias in this essay.

My purpose for reading this text was to analyze the text for my english 110 class. As well as bringing my thoughts on the text so that I would be prepared to discuss it in class with my classmates.

The author’s scope for this essay is that, “The most proficient way to teach the values of collaboration, flexibility, imagination, and innovation…is through the performing arts.” He then goes on to say that this means that everyone should participate in performing arts if they are going into a STEM field.

“Glossing Terms”:

Economic Forum’s Crystal Award: Award that recognizes artists that have made a significant impact in society.

Presidential Medal of Freedom: Awarded to people who have made significant contributions to the national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

  1. Gabe, this confused me: “While annotating “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” My annotating goals are being achieved, focusing on global edits instead of local edits has helped me immensely. My speed and concentration has improved as a result of not looking for grammatical errors and small, specific details.” Do you mean to say that you look for grammatical errors while reading our published sources?

Your annotations look great. You consistently engage with our texts, and this should help you better retain and understand our sources. Well done.
